May '23 Levy Tax Updates
Great News, Everyone!
We wanted to share a significant update regarding the ESD May 2023 Levy, and it's incredibly good news for our community!
Thanks to Idaho House Bill 292, a state fund has been allocated to assist school districts in supporting existing bonds and levies, with the aim of providing property tax relief to our constituents.
In August, we received the news that the expected amount to be applied to our single $1,000,000 levy is $887,110.36! This means that only $112,889.64 needs to be funded for this year through Gem County property taxes. Recently, we learned what this means for Gem County property owners.
Let's talk numbers! When the levy was passed in May 2023, the estimated levy amount to be paid was $36.40 per $100,000 of assessed property value. However, with the additional state funding, the new estimated amount to be paid this year has dramatically reduced to approximately $3.64 per $100,000 of assessed property value.
To put it into perspective, if your property is valued at $1,000,000, your total tax contribution for the entire YEAR would be $36.40!
In essence, the actual amount that local individual property owners will pay toward funding our local schools through this levy is approximately one-tenth of the initially expected amount. This is terrific news for our community members!
It's important to note that the funding provided by the state applies to this year, and we don't have information about whether property tax relief will be applicable to school bonds and levies in years to come.
The impact of the levy is already visible in our schools. It allowed us to replace Carberry’s roof last summer, and Shadow Butte's roof replacement is scheduled for next summer. The levy has also supported crucial maintenance and personnel needs.
You can find a detailed breakdown of how the levy funds have been utilized in the monthly budget reports available on the ESD website.
We are so thankful to our community for voting to provide funds for necessities in our school district, and we are excited to share that the direct property tax burden on our community members will be significantly less than initially anticipated. Your support is so appreciated!
Carberry Roof
Carberry's new roof was completed this summer! Check out these amazing pics! This project was funded from the May 2023 levy passed by our Gem County voters! We are so proud that our Carberry students have a bland new roof over their heads for the 2023-2024 school year. Thank you to our community for supporting local education and making this project possible. Next summer, Shadow Butte will be getting a new roof, courtesy of the same levy funds! Thank you!
New ESD Website
You're here! Months of hard work have culminated in the launch of our brand-new Emmett School District website! We are so proud of the result!
What's New? We've focused on making the new website user-friendly and easy to navigate, providing better access to vital information.
Your Input Matters: While we've worked tirelessly to make everything perfect, websites are always evolving. If you notice any links or details that need adjustment, please don't hesitate to let us know. We value your feedback and are open to any suggestions you may have. After all, it's a work in progress, and we're excited about the results so far!
Introducing Feedback Options: One of the exciting features is the feedback option. You'll find a "Feedback" icon on the district homepage and on every school homepage. This leads to a simple feedback form where you can share positive shout-outs, comments, concerns, suggestions, or even report bullying. This tool is open to students, parents, and all community members. You can choose to remain anonymous or request contact regarding your feedback. The feedback forms are also accessible through a link in the footer of every page. We hope this feedback option will enhance communication within our community.
Explore the New Website: Please take a few minutes to explore the site and discover all it has to offer. Let us know what you think!
EMS Restroom Remodel & Repair
Two sets of restrooms at the Emmett Middle School were remodeled over the summer. The restrooms near the office date all the way back to the original 1950s build, while the other restrooms at the opposite end of the school are from the 1970s era. It was time to give them a fresh, modern makeover!
The restroom remodel project was made possible through the general funds allocated in the 2022-2023 budget. A portion of these funds came from the lottery money used toward our district maintenance. Wright Brothers Construction! fearlessly took on this challenging project, tackling nightmarish 1950s plumbing and asbestos with expertise and dedication. Their outstanding workmanship and commitment to quality were truly appreciated as they helped us create safe, modern facilities for our students.
Upon completion of the remodeled restrooms near the office downstairs, unexpected leaks, and plumbing issues were discovered in the upstairs restrooms. Addressing these issues required extensive repairs, and with the age of the building, it was no small task. While the upstairs restrooms may not have received a full makeover like the other two sets of EMS restrooms, the repairs are now complete, and EMS now has all restrooms functioning and available for use!
Expanded Feedback Opportunities
Due to some inappropriate comments directed at students and their work, Emmett School District made the difficult decision to turn off Facebook comments. This was done at the advice of legal counsel and is in accordance with what many other school districts have done. Obtaining feedback from our community is vitally important to Emmett School District. We have implemented several avenues with which, parents, students, and community members can provide input.
Community Office Hour--We have allocated 2:00-3:00 every Wednesday following a regular school board meeting for Community Office Hour. If you have feedback or questions, you can drop by the district office and meet with Superintendent Woods and any of our other district admin. If this time doesn't work with your schedule, please feel free to call and set up an appointment at your convenience. The phone number for the district office is 208-365-6301.
Social Media--Though comments are no longer permitted on Facebook, you can still directly message the ESD Facebook page! We respond! This is a great way to get information fast.
Feedback Forms--Our new website comes equipped with feedback forms on the district and every school page! You can leave any kind of feedback, including positive shout-outs, concerns, questions, and suggestions. You can also choose if you want to remain anonymous or if you wish to be contacted about your feedback. To access all the feedback forms available via our website, please click the link below.
Transparent Levy Accounting
Our new website also allows you access to a monthly report of levy accounting. ESD is working to provide open transparency with the public regarding the funds allocated from the May 2023 Supplemental Levy. In each monthly budget report, a section is assigned for levy reporting. In the report from the October regular school board meeting, the levy accounting is located on page 26 at the link below. In the report, you can see exactly what levy funds were received and how they were spent.
Please Note: the numbers are continuously running and not project totals. For instance, some of the funds from projects completed during the summer, such as the Carberry roof, are just now being shown as released as of the October meeting. This detailed report can always be viewed and attached to the agenda for a regular school board meeting.
Monthly reports can also be viewed on the District's Financial Page.
Monthly School & Department Updates
Our departments and schools are providing updates monthly! These updates are presented to the school board at the regular board meeting and are available to the public on our website. You can easily see what has been accomplished and what is currently happening in Emmett School District. Updates are always available under the Transparency tab of the District Home page. You can also view them on the individual school and department pages. To check out the currently available School and Department Updates, please click the button below.
Idaho Report Card
The new Idaho Report Card for schools and districts was recently released. We were thrilled to find out that two of our schools are rated as Top Performers–meaning they are recognized as ranking in the top 10th percentile or above on key performance indicators! We’d like to extend a big shout-out to Carberry Elementary and Sweet Montour Elementary for being recognized as Top Performers!
Two of our other schools were recognized as Goal Makers. This means that they met the annual interim progress target. Congratulations to Emmett High School and Butte View Elementary!
We’re so proud of these recognitions and the hard work they represent for our students and staff!
The Idaho Report Card recognition can be viewed at this LINK, along with many other details about our district and individual school achievement.

EHS Restroom Remodel
Two sets of EHS restrooms are scheduled to be remodeled over Christmas break!
The restrooms in the atrium of the main dome and the visitor restrooms in the gymnasium dome will be remodeled using money allocated from the general fund. This project has been made possible because Covid funds have been applied to some areas usually covered by general funds. This has allowed funds to be rearranged, enabling projects like this must-needed restroom remodel to finally be a reality. Work will be completed by a local company--NHI (Nick's Home Improvements).
Here are some before pics! Check out the pink stalls! We can't wait to see the after photos!
Shadow Butte Roof
Shadow Butte is scheduled to get a new roof, just like Carberry! The roof project will be completed in the Summer of 2024! Funding for both Carberry and Shadow Butte's new roofs comes from the May 2023 school levy approved by Gem County voters. Thank you to our wonderful community for your support in making sure our students have adequate school roofs over their heads! Stay tuned for updates on this and other projects!

Exciting News - Graduation Returns to Emmett!
We have fantastic news that is a game-changer for our community!
In the October 2023 ESD school board meeting, the board gave the green light on a project that will bring new ADA-compliant bleachers to our high school, making it possible for our graduation ceremonies to return to Emmett!
Overcoming Challenges: For many years, we've had to hold graduation "over the hill" due to the lack of suitable facilities for such a significant event. If you've attended a football game, you're aware of the aging condition of our current bleachers and the safety concerns they pose.
Generous Donation: This project is made possible through an amazing, generous donation of $100,000 from the class of 2005. This money was donated with the purpose of being used to update the bleachers and bring graduation back to Emmett. The school board voted to cover the remaining amount (up to $190,000) with school district funds.
Benefits for All: Our new bleachers will meet ADA compliance, making our facilities accessible to all. Whereas our old bleachers were long designated as condemned, the new bleachers will increase capacity and meet safety standards, providing a safe venue for events, preventing us from navigating the less-than-ideal logistics of graduation elsewhere, and positively impacting commerce in our community.
Welcome Home: We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our anonymous donor whose contribution has played a vital role in making this possible. We are so excited to invite our community to a safe place for graduation and other future events at HOME!
Continued Updates
We are working hard to provide transparency and relevant information to our community. We want to provide multiple avenues for the public to access information, and we are eager to hear feedback! Toward these goals, we have provided information through social media, district and school newsletters, a new and improved website, advertisements in local periodicals, and an ESD mailer to every resident in Gem County.
Please watch for more "Heads Up" Information and know that it is part of our efforts to provide communication to you! Please let us know if you can't find any information that you need. We'd love to connect with you through any of the means listed. Please watch out for more of our communication efforts coming soon!
